Durable Goods Orders ex Transportation: A Less Optimistic Indicator

I've added an additional chart to my Durable Goods Orders series, one that shows a comparison since January 2000 with and without transportation. If we exclude the volatile transportation numbers, durable goods orders over the past seven months have been relatively flat. This suggests a more cautious outlook on the economic recovery than the broader orders data would appear to indicate.
